It’s all about old Hollywood glamour for fall, so give your beauty routine a vintage overhaul. From sultry red lips to a captivating complexion, Rudy Miles, one of the beauty industry’s leading makeup artists, shares how to take touches of 1940’s sophistication to create a look made for the modern day woman.

The Look

“This season’s makeup is creating a visible statement with an evolved, natural look. Eyes and lips are glamorous whether they are subtle or dramatic,” says Rudy Miles, global makeup educator for AVEDA.

The Fall Face

“It’s a return of a polished, pulled-together look from head-to-toe, and makeup is the accessory that pulls it all together,” says Miles, who has traveled the world teaching makeup classes for AVEDA. “Key references to the 20’s, 40’s and 80’s are obvious but updated and new, not literal.”

Face First

A flawless complexion is a key element to your overall look, according to Miles, who recommends using products that enhance and boost, not just cover up, the skin, like AVEDA’s Enbrightenment Skin Care Line. “Because challenges with hyperpigmentation and discoloration are sometimes a concern for women of color, a safe and effective skin care regimen should be used to achieve the best complexion possible.”

Foundation A to Z

“For this season, healthy skin is achieved by using a powder or blush brush to brush on a sheer layer of foundation powder. This gives beautiful coverage but feels lightweight on the skin,” shares Miles.

Foundation A to Z

“If you prefer a liquid foundation, apply only where needed and lightly set with powder to the look,” asserts Miles. “The goal is to create a beautiful complexion that doesn’t scream foundation.” Miles suggests trying AVEDA Inner Light Dual Foundation in Teak, Ginger or Carob.

Eye Do

Keep your eyes subtle and sexy by using a neutral base color on the entire lid. “Choosing a matte or shimmer shade that matches your rich natural skin tone subtly enhances the eyes,” say Miles. “Finish the look with eye liner smudged at the lash line and mascara on top and bottom lashes.” If you want to up the glam factor, don a pair of faux lashes for a twist to the look.

Lash Out

We selected these lash blasters for their ability to lengthen and strengthen the lashes under any weather conditions. Remember to apply your mascara first at the root and through the tip for the illusion of longer lashes.

Browsing Around

Brows are strong and well-defined this season. Try using a powder rather than a pencil to create a natural-looking brow color with intense definition.

Cheek to Cheek

Keep cheek color to a minimum this fall. “Apply a hint of color to apples of the cheeks for a fresh flush. Or blend just below the cheekbone and up onto cheeks for subtle contour,” advises Miles, who suggests using vibrant blush shades of peach, plum and soft red to add radiance to the face.

Product Picks
AVEDA’s Petal Essence Cheek Color in Apricot Glow, Cheek Tint Oleander or Face Accents Tesserae to get fierce flush.

On the Radar

During Fashion Week New York we stumbled upon an exciting new cosmetic brand, MX Essentials, that you’ll definitely want to put on your beauty radar. Their debut line, “The Star Collection,” designed by CEO & creative chemist Maria Moore, is formulated with colors and tones in mind for women with rich brown to dark complexions. With a majority of the products under $30, it’s a steal of a deal for any beauty girl (Mxessentials.com).

Pucker Up

A red light may mean stop, but we’re giving you permission to go ahead and rock a ruby-hued pout this fall. “Brick red and berry tones are great on deeper skin tones, while true reds and orange reds are better on light to medium skin tones. For an update to wearing red lip color, forgo lip liner,” says Miles.

Lady In Red

No man can resist the irresistible temptation of fiery red haute lips.
