Tennessee Store Clerk Found Guilty Of Killing Teen Over Stolen $2 Beer
A Tennessee store clerk has been found guilty of fatally killing a Black teen last year after chasing him for a stolen $2 beer.
Anwar Ghazali was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder for shooting and killing Dorian Harris, 17, last March after he stole a beer from a cooler at the Top Stop Shop in Memphis.
Ghazali chased after him and fired several shots at Harris, CNN reports.
“I think I shot him,” Ghazali told a witness, according to the press release and affidavit. Neither Ghazali nor the witness called the police
Harris’ body was found two days later in a backyard near the store by a neighbor, according to NBC News.
“This defendant took it upon himself to be the judge and jury and the executioner over a $2 beer,” prosecutor Lora Fowler said, according to CNN affiliate WMC.
Ghazali was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder after admitting to firing shots at the teen.
Harris’ family members mourned the 17-year-old after the killing.
“It shouldn’t have happened like that,” his grandmother Effie Fitch told WMC in April 2018. “He was a child and that was an adult. He ought to have more responsibility than that and he’s running a business.”
Ghazali’s sentencing is scheduled for September 23.
