John Legend Is On A Mission To Stop Brett Kavanaugh’s Confirmation
John Legend is no stranger to activism and often uses his platform to tackle issues such as prison reform and the criminal justice system. But now the singer is taking his activism up to the Supreme Court, starring in a video put out by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, encouraging voters to call their senators to keep Brett Kavanaugh off the bench.
“Who becomes the next Supreme Court Justice is the decision of a lifetime — your lifetime,” Legend, who recently became the first black man to get an EGOT, says in the video. “Brett Kavanaugh’s troubling views on the issues that matter the most and his rushed confirmation process make him unfit for a lifetime appointment to the supreme court.”
The video also highlights a diverse group of people, including people of color, women, and members of the LGBTQ community, noting how the decisions of the court will ultimately impact them.

“This fall, your senators will vote on Kavanaugh,” Legend said. “How they vote will impact you for a lifetime. Tell them to vote no on Kavanaugh. Remember, they answer to you.”
Kavanaugh, one of the most contentious supreme court nominees to date, has been roundly criticized for his record on voting rights, women’s rights and reproductive health, LGBTQ rights and more.
More recently, his nomination has been in the spotlight after being accused of sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford at a high school party, some thirty years ago when they were both teens.
