Issa Rae Proves Why She's The Queen Of 4C Natural Hair On Insecure
We are mere days away from the season three premiere of HBO’s Insecure, and waiting with bated breath to see where the show takes us in the world of these Black millennials just trying to live their best lives.
Now that Issa and Lawrence have found closure on their failed relationship, will Issa be able to get her life on track? How will the whole Daniel-as-her-roommate thing play out? Will the partners at Molly’s firm finally give her the validation she’s earned? Is Dro still in the picture? Will we get the tea on Tiffany’s faux perfect marriage?
This all remains to be seen this season, but what we know for sure is that Molly will be serving looks, and Issa will be serving natural hair inspo. Issa’s life may be in total disarray, but much like Black women IRL, her hair will always be done. This is one of the many detailed qualities that make Issa’s character so relatable.
With more Black women being featured on shows like Grownish, Black Lightning, and Love Is, there is much more visibility on the versatility of Black hair, and Issa’s type 4 hair is no exception. Her stylist, Felecia Featherwood, works really hard to show how versatile kinkier, coilier hair can be.
“I always like to respect my client’s boundaries and do great work,” Featherwood told ESSENCE. “That is what’s important to me, so it’s less about friendship and more about making my clients look and feel their best.”
As we gear up for the new season of Insecure, let’s take a look back at some of Issa’s best hair moments on the show.
TWA with Scarf Accessory
Issa in chill mode with her short fro and scarf. A stylish scarf is always a great way to both accessorize and lay your edges.
Flat Twist Crown Braid
This protective style is a great option for a formal look.
Issa all smiles with her go to teeny weeny afro.
Twist Out Faux Hawk
For a fun look, Issa’s sides are laid and pinned up to form a long, curly mohawk.
Crown Braid with Fro
Issa’s fro is pulled back with two side swept cornrows, giving a halo of texture.
Faux Hawk with Cornrows on the Side
This faux hawk is made by braiding down either side of the hair into multiple cornrows, leaving the middle kinky.
Issa’s coils are gathered at the top of her head, and surrounded by a single crown braid giving sophisticated flair.
Straight Back Braids
This look is achieved by gathering a few large sections of hair into large cornrows.
TWA with Headband
Issa’s stylist knows how to shake things up with her coily fro by adding a hair accessory like this textured headband.
Issa’s lightly colored teeny weeny afro made a few appearances on the show for effortless style.
Side Swept Flat Twists Into Low Bun
For a more casual, chic look Issa is wearing flat twists that are gathered into a low bun at the base of her neck. As per yooj, edges are pefectly laid.
Faux Hawk with Chic Side Cornrows
Perfectly laid edges are the precursor to this faux hawk made with single cornrows down the side.
Faux Hawk with Coily Crown
Here Issa’s sides are sleekly swept up into a faux hawk, while the top is left out in kinky coils for a textured crown.
