The careful selection of a shampoo that clarifies and moisturizes is key to maintaining a healthy head of locs. Take the time to read the ingredients formulated in your shampoo and avoid anything with ingredients that start with PPG or PEG. These type of additives tend to leave behind residue, which ultimately accumulate inside your locs and cause build up, odor and dryness. Aim for organic finds infused with essential oils, like DollyLocks Tea Tree Spearmint Shampoo

Leave in conditioners are going to be your best friend. However, since thick formulas are generally difficult to rinse out of locs, opt for a leave-in spray that will provide the same amount of = moisture without the heavy build-up.

The heat and moisture provided from steamers allows the penetration of your moisturizing products to do their job more effectively. Look for a hooded steamer that will cover your entire head. At the same time, be cognizant of constant manipulation and drying methods that can reverse all of the moisture you've just put back into your hair.

Keep your locs full of moisture and shine by loading up on pure base oils, such as grapeseed, jojoba (above) or hempseed. These oils are lightweight, more easily absorbed into locs and less likely to cause build up. Make an effort to concentrate the oils toward the mid-shaft and ends. This ensures that it's distributed beyond the roots of each strand.

As with any other style, wrapping up your locs at night is one of the most important habits you can start to prevent moisture-resistant fabrics like cotton from causing dryness and frizz. If you haven't already, invest in a satin bonnet that's large enough to secure all of your hair without falling off.
