Serena Williams Opens Up About Struggling With Postpartum Depression
While motherhood has clearly been a beautiful experience for tennis G.O.A.T. Serena Williams her journey was not without challenges — many of which moms everywhere can relate to.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion covers the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK. In the cover story, Williams opens up about struggling with postpartum depression after birthing her now 8-month-old daughter, Alexis Olympia. In the feature, she also recalled a specific moment where she began crying because she’d misplaced her newborn’s bottle.
“I remember one day, I couldn’t find Olympia’s bottle,” she recalls. “I got so upset I started crying.” In recent years, many celebrity mothers have come forward to discuss their own dark days after giving birth, including Chrissy Teigen.
The 36-year-old champion also dealt with a myriad of complications during her pregnancy.
“I think people need to talk about it more because it’s almost like the fourth trimester,” she also says to Bazaar. “It’s part of the pregnancy.”
Thankfully, she’s no longer striving for perfection but hoping “to be the best mom I can be.”
