Mo’Nique Has Some Thoughts About That Conversation With Steve Harvey
Mo’Nique has responded to Steve Harvey following the passionate discussion they shared on The Steve Harvey Show earlier this week.
The comedian shared some of the memes and commentary surrounding the discussion over her career with Harvey, agreeing with many over Harvey’s flawed suggestion, as many argued, that she should put her integrity aside when there is money on the table.
“I just had to repost this. This is for anybody putting money first and not the love of your people,” she captioned one post. “I love us for real!”
“This gave me chills! What has changed!! Y’all I love us 4 real!! We deserve to love us better!” she posted under another.
The long-time friends’ discussion about Mo’Nique’s strategy for her career — from her fight for pay equity to her fraught relationship with key members in Hollywood— received major backlash over how Harvey seemingly dismissed and spoke over Mo’Nique’s arguments.
Many found issue with Harvey’s suggestion that integrity has to take a backseat –when there’s money to be made–problematic and did not hold back their thoughts.
Mo’Nique, who’s currently promoting a Las Vegas residency at SLS Hotel’s Sayers Club, has been sounding off about pay equity for Black women in Hollywood. Netflix infamously offered her $500,000 for a comedy special. Reportedly, the same streaming service offered Amy Schumer $11 million, with Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle, earning $40 million and $60 million respectively.
The comedian told ESSENCE last month that she’s learned “patience” from sounding the alarm on the lack of pay equity because she “understood” where many were coming from.
“We get fearful of losing out, so we just keep accepting. When people say, ‘Mo’Nique, what’s wrong with you? Don’t you know what’s going to happen?’ Well, baby, I’m going to have to deal with that, but hopefully the little girl who’s not here yet, she won’t,” Mo’Nique explained. “If I don’t do my part, then the ones that came before me will look at me like, ‘What [are] you doing? You know the a-s whuppings we took for you?’”
