Take notes this summer from Nigerian-born, London-based designer Duro Olowu on how to style printed textiles.

In an interview with NY Times Fashion & Beauty, the designer reveals that his creative process is kind of spontaneous. “I don’t know where anything is going to go yet,” he admits. “That’s how I work when I’m mixing fabrics. I don’t plan; I do it last minute. It’s instinctive. If it’s not right; I just know.”

Essentially, the trick to pulling off mix-matched vibrant prints is simply just going with your gut and being confident! This is a great tip to practice for your summer style.

The Brit explains how his go-to accessory is the silk scarf and that he collects fabric the way some people collect Rolexes. “[Scarves are] really transformative. It completely changes the look,” explains the designer.

Olowu often frequents New York where his wife Thelma Golden, Studio Museum director, is based. Check out his interview here.
