This is the first Tony Award the actress has won.
The Great White Way is welcoming a new legend tonight.
Lupita Nyong’o just won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role in Eclipsed.
The play, which is the first show in Broadway history to feature an entirely Black female cast and crew, tells he story of five Liberian women during the Second Liberian Civil War.
Though Nyong’o already boasts an Academy Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave, this is the first Broadway show—and Tony Award—that the actress has won.
