Supermodel Karli Kloss is hosting a two-week coding academy aimed at teen girls.
Supermodel Karli Kloss is hosting a free two-week coding camp this summer, and your daughter needs to be there.
As a apart of her initiative to give young girls a jump start in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields, Kloss is hosting three 2-week coding camps this summer in New York, Los Angeles and St. Louis for teen girls aged 13-18. Following Flatiron's web development curriculum through the use of learn.co, scholars will be taught by independent instructors. By the end of the program, they will know the basics of Ruby on Rails—a web application program—and they will have built their very own web app.
Flatiron's dean and co-founder Avi Flombaum believes coding is the way to keep young students engaged. "When they do actually build apps, we allow them to pick a project and pick a place where they want to improve the world and contribute ways in which they are expressing themselves, not us," he says. "We’re giving them the tool set or the vocabulary with which to model a phenomenon or project or concept. Code really becomes the medium, and the end result becomes what they are more interested in," he told Fast Company in a recent interview.
Kloss shares those sentiments. "Before my first coding class, the idea that I could build something with code seemed practically impossible," she explains. "Within a couple of classes, I was working with my classmates to program a small drone. I realized that code is about creativity — just like art and fashion — and that women who have these skills have the power to shape our future."
Three Kode with Klossy camps will be held in total:
St. Louis— June 20-July 1
New York— July 11-July 22
Los Angeles— July 25- August 5
To apply to Kode with Klossy, submit an application via the Flatiron website, here, and upload a 60-second video to YouTube with the hashtag #KodeWithKlossy detailing how you plan to use your coding superpowers to change the world.
