"Trump made me believe. Until I woke up.”
Nothing lasts forever, and a former Donald Trump strategist is thinking that the presidential hopeful’s time is running down.
Penning an essay for XoJane, former Trump strategist Stephanie Cegielski explains how she went from one of “The Donald’s” biggest supporters to one of his loudest naysayers.
“Almost a year ago, recruited for my public relations and public policy expertise, I sat in Trump Tower being told that the goal was to get The Donald to poll in double digits and come in second in delegate count,” she wrote. “That was it…His candidacy was a protest candidacy.”
She admits that in the beginning, she admired his tenacity and business skills. However, it wasn’t long, she says, before his campaign took on a life of its own and quickly became something bigger than Trump. His candidacy soon turned into a matter of maintaining his ego.
“He certainly was never prepared or equipped to go all the way to the White House, but his ego has now taken over the driver’s seat, and nothing else matters,” she writes.
Calling him a “self-preservationist,” she accuses him of failing to listen to Americans, but rather simply hear the sound of his own voice. In fact, she said, the secret slogan among Trump’s camp turned into “Let Trump Be Trump.”
Cegielski writes that her passion for supporting Trump has quickly turned into anger while witnessing Trump put on various “characters”—a trait unfit for a political leader. She urges people to realize that Trump is, in fact, not the best candidate in next year’s election.
“I consider myself a part of the silent majority that led to Trump’s rise, which is why I want you to know that I am with you—I wanted Trump to be real, too,” she said. “He is not. He even says so himself. His misogyny? That’s the character. His presidential candidacy? That's a character, too. The problem with characters is they are the stuff of soap operas and sitcoms and reality competitions — not political legacies. Trump made me believe. Until I woke up.”
