Nate Parker made his directorial debut with the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Birth of a Nation, and will be honored at this year’s CinemaCon as the breakthrough director of the year.

Did we mention he also wrote, starred in and produced the film? Talk about a creative force. Parker, who is best known for his roles in The Secret Life of Bees, The Great Debators and Beyond the Lights, reportedly took time off from acting to bring Nat Turner’s slave rebellion story to the screen.

According to Variety, “The Las Vegas gathering of theater owners is usually focused on tentpole films, not indie pictures, but expectations are high for the drama, which centers on Nat Turner’s 1831 slave rebellion. ‘The Birth of a Nation’ sparked a bidding war at Sundance with Fox Searchlight swooping in to land global rights to the film for $17.5 million. That’s a record price for a film at the festival.”

CinemaCon is set to be held April 11-14 at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas, and the film will debut October 7. Variety believes the film is expected to be a major Oscars awards contender.
