TMZ reports that the knife was said to have been discovered years ago by a construction worker who handed it over to an off-duty LAPD officer. Instead of turning it in, the officer kept it at his residence for several years. When the officer retired he contacted a friend in the department's Robbery Homicide Division to get the departmental record number for the O.J. case because he wanted to obtain the number to have it engraved on a frame he planned to have the knife placed in.
