Johnson, founder of BET, is standing behind the film his company is distributing, despite the controversy surrounding it.
Lots of people are not here for the upcoming biopic on the life and times of Nina Simone but one man is standing behind the film.
Robert L. Johnson, founder of BET and RLJ Entertainment, is praising Saldana for a wonderful portrayal of the late singer and activist amidst anger surrounding the actress' portrayal in NINA.
"Zoe Saldana delivers an exceptional and mesmerizing tribute to Nina Simone," Johnson said in a statement. "She gave her heart and soul to the role and displayed her extraordinary talent."
"The most important thing is that creativity or quality of performance should never be judged on the basis of color, or ethnicity, or physical likeness. Quality entertainment should be measured by the sheer force of creativity and the commitment that an actor or actress brings to the performance.”
RLJ Entertainment aquired distribution rights for the biopic in 2015.
NINA opens in theaters on April 22, 2016 Will you be catching it?
