How did you meet your man?
We met through a mutual friend, Maurice, who actually tried to make the love connection back in 2006, but as fate would have it, we didn’t begin dating until 2012, with the help of a persistent friend and social media. When Maurice initially informally introduced me to Greg, I proactively sought him out on Facebook. I initiated the conversation, but he did not take the bait. Several years passed and I reached out to him after the devastating Haiti earthquake, because I knew he was of Haitian decent. I believe, and he confirmed, that it was then that the initial spark was lit. A couple more years later I hosted a party and invited my friend Maurice and some of his friends. Greg took the opportunity to reach out to me and inquired about my relationship status.
What was your dating life like before you met?
Let’s just say I “beat the bushes,” covering all bases of online dating to no avail. I even broadened my horizons and stepped outside my cultural comfort zone. After many dating disappointments and broken hearts, I turned to my faith in God and was reminded that I am that “good thing” that the scripture refers to in Proverbs 18:22. I redirected my focus on God and finding wholeness in Him while simply enjoying my own presence. I went on a “date diet” for a year and courted myself, making self-discoveries and finding out how truly amazing I was. It was then and only then, that I looked up to find Mr. Right practically waiting for me.
Was it love at first sight?
It was love at first sight for me because he had endearing eyes and a warm smile in his profile picture. I really hoped all of that lived up to his personality in real life. Fortunately, it did. As for my feelings, I didn’t try to avoid them because I had already done the emotional and spiritual preparation during my “date diet”, so I knew exactly what I was feeling and the authenticity of it all.
Most romantic date ever?
Jamaica! Just being on the island alone with the one you love is the epitome of romance. We dined, we danced, we strolled on the beach in the moonlight, and we were simply engulfed in each other’s love and presence. I still remember trying to get ready for our dinner reservations and Greg arranged for our butler to decorate our room for no special occasion other than as an expression of love, but he came early and almost ruined the surprise. I still think about how cute the gesture was.
Who said “I love you” first?
I did, but in my own awkward way. I prefaced it by saying, “I’m going to say something, but don’t feel obligated to say it back. I just want to get it out.” He smiled sweetly and said, “I love you too.”
How long did you date before you got engaged?
Two and a half years.
Did you have a hunch he was going to propose?
Not the faintest idea. We are both big on family with being the youngest of both families, and he arranged for both of our families to come to Atlanta so that we could be surrounded by love.
How did he pop the question?
He picked a weekend when most of my family would be in Atlanta anyway. Every year as Atlanta chair of Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), I participate in the cancer walk in memory of my brother Marcus and my family walks with me as support. Greg arranged for his family to fly down from New Jersey for “varied reasons.” The day after the walk, we had a big family dinner at his aunt’s house just to celebrate life and family. Little did I know, he was sneaking some of my family and our friends into the house and had them separated from the part of the house where I was sequestered. Next thing I know, I was called into the family room (how fitting) and discovered a room full of people. I turned around and there was Greg down on one knee. The entire thing was captured on video, which went viral on social media.
