The repeat offender was taken into police custody last week for allegedly throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend
George Zimmerman was arrested last Friday night in Lake Mary, FL, after allegedly throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend, reports The Orlando Sentinel. This is his second arrest since a jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin and the third time he has been arrested on domestic abuse charges. He was also arrested in 2005 for resisting an officer with violence.
Zimmerman posted $5,000 bail on Saturday afternoon and has a court date set for February 17, where he will be brought in on a charge of aggravated assault. The court has ordered him to surrender his firearms and stay out of Volusia County, where his unnamed girlfriend resides.
"If charges are filed, Mr. Zimmerman stands ready to defend against them," said his attorney, Don West, to the Sentinel. "There will be an arraignment, at which point I'll appear, enter a plea of not guilty and we'll proceed as we always do."
Zimmerman made headlines nearly three years ago after he shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, FL. Since his acquittal in that case, he has been the center of numerous domestic violence disputes, including one in which his now ex-wife said he had threatened her with his firearm. Shortly after that incidenct, he was arrested again when his girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, called 911 and said that he had threatened her with a gun as well. Zimmerman faced no charges in either case.
