How did you meet your man?
Martin and I met at one of his fraternity brother’s birthday party in Sacramento, CA over the holiday season in 2007. He seemed immediately smitten and he invited me to a Ledisi concert later that week on my birthday.
Were you looking for love at the time?
Quite honestly, no I wasn’t. I was newly single and I wasn’t looking for any relationship of any kind.
What was your first impression of him?
My first impression of Martin was that he was very persistent. He asked me out that first night we met and I kind of brushed it off. I never gave him my number but he tracked me down via Facebook and through other friends. So if nothing else, his work ethic was on point.
What was his first impression of you?
Oh, he was in love! He actually whispered that fact to my line sister (Martin has never been good at whispering). He will say he didn’t, but later that night, he introduced me to someone else as his “future ex-wife.” You can’t make these things up.
Describe your most romantic date ever?
It was a surprise trip to Shasta, CA. We stayed in a resort where we had our own cabin far away from friends (and cell phone reception). He also scheduled a spa appointment for me to get pampered. It was a quiet and relaxing time, and we just got to enjoy each other’s company without a lot of distractions.
Best gift he ever got you?
Besides my engagement ring, I would have to say the best gift Martin ever got me was a framed picture collage filled with photos of us throughout the years. He put a lot of work into it and I could tell it was from the heart.
How did he pop the question?
A friend of mine called me to ask me to be in one of her photo shoots for her vintage boutique’s website at the Rose Garden in Oakland, CA. Now, I thought it was pretty weird that I would not be wearing any clothing from her boutique, but I did not question her. After taking pictures for about a half an hour Martin showed up (seemingly out of nowhere) and handed me flowers, recited a poem and asked me to marry him. Without hesitation, I said yes. But wait, there's more: I had to go to my sorority meeting right after this happened. I wanted to flake, but he insisted that I go. Later that day he sent me a text message to tell me to come by a certain lounge. I get there and a whole heap of family and friends, including my parents and my sister. Just when I thought there couldn't be any more surprises there were.
