Lauryn Hill began a three-month prison sentence for tax evasion at a federal prison in Connecticut.

According to TMZ, she checked into the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury at 11:15 a.m. on Monday.

The Grammy Award-winning singer is said to be placed in a minimum security facility and will reside amongst the general population. Hill’s sentence comes after the Fugees frontwoman refused to pay taxes on $1.8 million in earnings.

She recently voiced her frustration with the IRS on her tumblr page.

“I shuddered during sentencing when I kept hearing the term ‘make the IRS whole’…make the IRS whole, knowing that I got into these very circumstances having to deal with the very energies of inequity and resistance that created and perpetuated these savage inequalities,” she wrote.

Prior to her sentencing, Hill signed a record deal with Sony which helped her pay off nearly $970,000 on the amount she owed.

After serving her prison time, Hill is set to be on house arrest for three additional months.
