Speaking in Chicago before a jubilant crowd of thousands celebrating his re-election, President Barack Obama thanked supporters and promised to work across the aisle — including with his Republican rival Mitt Romney — to move the United States forward over the next four years.

"Tonight, more than 200 years after a former colony won the right to determine its  own destiny, the task of perfecting our union moves forward," the President told the "fired up" audience shortly after taking the stage at 1 a.m. ET.

The President's re-election was carried by his victories in the swing states of New Hampshire, Michigan, New Mexico, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and the hotly contested Ohio. Obama won not only the electoral college vote, but also the popular vote.
