The ESSENCE Music Festival headliner is honored with TV Land's Music Icon Award.
ESSENCE Music Festival headliner Aretha Franklin will have to make room for one more statue in her awards cabinet. The Queen of Soul has been named the recipient of this year's TV Land Music Icon Award reports Billboard.
"It is indeed an honor and a pleasure to receive the icon award. Professionally, it's wonderful," Franklin said shortly after receiving the honor during the show's taping on April 14. The awards ceremony will air Sunday, April 29 and will show Franklin being serenaded by John Legend. Franklin also takes the stage to sing a few of her best hits including "Chain of Fools" and "Respect."
Despite her icon status, Franklin is far from finished making music. Franklin revealed that she is working on a new album under the direction of producer Clive Davis.
"Ahhh, I can tell you its gonna be better than its ever been," said Franklin about her new project. "[Clive] is talking to the great writers now. We're looking for the great songs. And we're going to do it again one more time."
In addition to working with Davis, Franklin says her son Eddie will also help with the album and she has her eyes on a few other musical heavyweights, too.
"I'd love to get some Ne-Yo songs on there. Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds I've been talking to and he has some songs that might be a good fit."
