When I First Saw You
Three years ago, Melanca’s decision to attend a friend’s birthday party changed her life forever. Working as an attorney, she lived in New York City at the time, but her policy and legislative advocacy work brought her to Washington, D.C. quite often. As fate would have it, she was in town for business the weekend of the party, so she happily attended to support her friend. It was there that Melanca met Moddie, a real estate developer who spotted her from across the room, and was so mesmerized, he just had to walk over and say hello.
I Choose You
In the summer of 2010, Melanca moved to D.C. and she and the love of her life finally shared the same zip code. Moddie proposed that winter with a little help from one of Melanca’s close friends. “She helped him pick out a ring from The Clay Pot in Brooklyn,” she tells us. “When the ring arrived in the mail, Moddie said it was burning a hole in his pocket, so he decided to propose the same day.” There was just one thing he needed to do first: Ask her mom for permission.
Moddie took Melanca’s mom out for dinner to reveal his intentions. While they were out, she was at home stewing because he’d promised to wash the pots and hadn’t. Annoyed, she texted him about it, unaware that he was distracted for good reason. An undeterred Moddie returned home with love in his heart and handed Melanca a sweet poem that ended with the questions, “Will you marry me?” She was thrilled and surprised, so she returned the favor. “I said yes, then I asked him to marry me back because I wanted him to know he was my chosen one too,” she says. Talk about a modern fairy-tale. Share their love!
