The stars came out to support Obama's presidential campaign at the Greenwich Hotel.
Beyoncé, Angela Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg were among the high-profile celebs who gathered at New York's Greenwich Hotel for a fundraising dinner for President Obama's re-election campaign. New York Magazine reports that Robert De Niro and his wife, Grace Hightower, hosted the swanky $5,000 a plate soirée.
Some 85 people attended the event with guest of honor, Michelle Obama. The First Lady arrived at 9 p.m. after taping her first guest appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.
"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now, do you really think our country is ready for a White First Lady," De Niro asked the room. The crowd reportedly "roared" with a "no!" He jokingly replied, "Too soon, right?"
According to guests, the topic of conversation centered around "how the Republicans had crossed the line in terms of women's rights." Mrs. Obama then wrapped up the event by asking the crowd, "Final question to you all: Are you in?" As she departed, the crowd chanted "Fired up! Ready to go!"
