"Why aren’t they attacking Kim’s right to get married the way they do ours?"
Yesterday, news broke that Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from her “husband” of 72 days, NBA player Kris Humphries. No shocker there! Regardless of everyone’s thoughts on whether the entire over-the-top “reality affair” was staged or not, the reality star’s pending divorce is yet another example of how straight people get a pass when they abuse the institution of marriage. Kim, Britney, and the list goes on….
One can’t help but notice the dead silence from groups like the so-called National Organization for Marriage whose sole mission is to “preserve the sanctity of marriage” by blocking gays and lesbians from joining in it. Why aren’t they outraged when these straight starlets stomp all over “traditional marriage” in their Louboutins? Surely this match-made-for-media-fodder erodes the sanctity of all that marriage is supposed to be. So why aren’t they attacking Kim’s right to get married the way they do ours?
We were together over 6 years before we were able to legally get married. We shared a home, became indispensable parts of each other’s families, and had long committed to share our lives together. But most states refuse to allow us to take part in the institution of marriage simply because we are a gay couple.
What does it say about this country when we celebrate and cheer as millions tune in to watch the sham of “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding," then turn our backs on thousands of taxpaying, law abiding, gay couples who actually want to share in the real opportunities and responsibilities of marriage that these frivolous celebutantes so casually take for granted?
Conservatives in Congress continue to push the idea that if we overturn the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that bans gay couples from marrying, all hell is going to break loose. They’d like us to believe that the marriage certificates of straight couples will suddenly burst into flames, and that it will then rain for 40 days and 40 nights across the world.
You want to preserve the sanctity of marriage? Then let gays and lesbians be a part of it! They seem to be the only traditionally minded folks still left in this country that believe in committing to one person for the rest of their lives. Can Kim Kardashian or Newt Gingrich say the same?
Marriage isn’t about the right to register at Neiman-Marcus, flaunt your 20 carat ring around town, or create a faux royal wedding! Marriage is about finding the one person who loves you and only you in a world of 7 billion and wanting to honor that love and commitment in front of family and friends and have it recognized in the eyes of the law.
Before Kim Kardashian and others get to walk down their umpteenth aisle, the gay community should get to walk down at least one.
