More than 1,000 people attended the funeral of Troy Davis held yesterday at Jonesville Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia. Davis was celebrated as a martyr and foot soldier by his family, supporters and other activists who pledged to continue pushing to abolish the death penalty in the U.S.

The crowd was brought to its feet in a chant of "I am Troy Davis" led by Benjamin Todd Jealous, national president of the NAACP. Many of those in attendance also wore t-shirts with the slogan, which supporters used to paint Davis as an everyman forced to face the executioner by a faulty justice system.
