Post Office Named for Civil Rights Icon Dorothy Height

Once one of the country’s most prominent civil rights leaders, the late Dorothy Height will now have her own post office. President Obama recently signed a bill naming an United States post office in Washington D.C. the new Dorothy I. Height Post Office. Height, who died at 98 earlier this year, championed the National Council of Negro Women and served as the 10th National President for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Whether marching in her signature hats or pioneering desegregation of the YWCA, Height dedicated her life to a fight for justice. President Obama — who met with Height roughly a dozen times before she passed — said she will be canonized among a group of African-American leaders in history books. “Dr. Dorothy Height deserves a place in this pantheon,” Obama said in her eulogy. “She, too, deserves a place in our history books.
