Granny, Nana, Abuelita, “Toot,” we may call her by different names, but the love we have for her is the same no matter where we’re from. So often she is the anchor of our families and community. On this Mother’s Day ESSENCE.com would like to take a moment to celebrate our grandmothers and offer a few reasons why we love them so: “When a child is born, so is a grandmother” goes the saying. Maybe it’s because their own children no longer need that much nurturing and care, but some grandmothers seem to take on a renewed appreciation for mothering when a grandchild is born. We’re not complaining. They give us their all: Even with very little, some grandmothers (Madea included) will give us their last to make sure we’re taken care of. President Obama has always talked about how much his grandmother Madelyn Dunham did for him. “She poured everything she had into me,” he said. They impart wisdom to us: Only age can give a person wisdom and more often than not, grandmothers aren’t afraid to tell you like it really is and hope you’ll see it for yourself down the line. They push us to be better: Our grandmothers may have lived in tougher times (like the Jim Crow South) so they’re also looking to their grandchildren to carry the dream forward. Oprah has talked about how her grandmother’s decision to teach her to read opened up a whole new world for her. “I am where I am today because my grandmother gave me the foundation for success that I was allowed to continue to build upon,” she said. Grandmothers make the world go ’round, just ask Bill Withers. So tell us, how will you be celebrating your grandmother this Mother’s Day?
