Today’s topic: Being belittled and degraded Good morning Shirley and Steve, I am 24 years old and I am dating a 30-year-old guy and we have a child together. Ever since we moved in together I have been catching hell. He degrades me and calls me names and tells me I’m not smart enough and that I will never make it anywhere. I try and do all that is necessary to support us but sometimes that isn’t enough. I don’t know why he treats me as he does. He is the type of guy who thinks he’s smarter and has more class than anyone else. In our relationship I spend my time trying to make sure I always do things right because I am afraid that he will criticize me or call me dumb. Those words hurt me, but I don’t know my way out. I do know that I don’t want the relationship, but I need help. Steve, could you help me? What is all of this from him? He’s not physically abusive but mentally abusive. What should I do? Is this an insecurity that I have? Is it him? Please help me because I have been going through some things. I’m stressed because I don’t know my worth and I think it has been stripped away from me. He has torn me down.
