Governor David Paterson went to visit the family of slain NYPD Officer Omar Edwards to pay his respects, according to the New York Times. Gov. Paterson has requested an independent investigation by the state that would evaluate police procedures and provide recommendations on ways to improve the system. Edwards was shot and killed by another NYPD officer last week. While the Governor doesn’t believe the incident was motivated by race, he did express deep concern over why similar incidents continue to occur in New York. Police officers in New York City are currently receiving additional training as a result of this situation. —WLW
