African American author Richard Wright was born in Mississippi and died in Paris but it was Chicago where he spent 10 years establishing a career as a revered writer. The U.S Postal Service recently debuted a new 61-cent stamp honoring the “Native Son” novelist, who also worked as a postal clerk in the Windy City, and features Chicago’s South Side as the backdrop. Kadir Nelson, the designer of the stamp, obtained a 1930’s picture of Chicago’s South Side to use for the illustration. Wright is the 25th American author to receive this accolade. -PS
