Billey Joe Johnson was a 17-year old Mississippi high school student with a promising football career. The junior George County High School student was pulled over on December 8, 2008 for running a stop light when the police say he accidentally shot himself in the head. A grand jury ruled last week that Johnson’s wound was indeed self inflicted after weighing whether or not it was an accident, suicide or even possibly murder, according to The Associated Press. There is no evidence that the deputy who pulled Johnson over had fired the gun and that there was no one else involved. Johnson’s family and the local NAACP continue to reject the notion of suicide and will fight to have an independent investigation of the case. -WLW
