Folks visiting the Tampa area for the Super Bowl this weekend might be in for a real “historic” surprise. Members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans have decided to erect a giant Confederate flag visible from a major Tampa highway, according to The Tampa Tribune. The group claims that the 30-by-60-foot rebel flag is a means of promoting what they say is an effort to honor Southern heritage. However, some local Blacks aren’t so sure. “What they are talking about does not represent the values of Hillsborough County,” says Curtis Stokes, president of the Hillsborough County branch of the NAACP and a member of the Tampa Bay Super Bowl Host Committee. “All they want is publicity.”—BB
