Giving a whole new meaning to “show and tell,” a White social studies teacher from Haverstraw Middle School in New York attempted to show her students the ramifications of being brought over on slave ships by binding the hands and feet of two Black girls and having them crawl under a desk in her seventh-grade class. According to the Associated Press, Eileen Berstein was met with outrage from one girl’s mother and the local chapter of the NAACP. Superintendent Brian Monahan promised to have a conversation with the staff on how to better deliver specific lessons. The teacher has since apologized.
