Wedding plans are the furthest thing from Jennifer’s Hudson’s mind. The Oscar-winning actress got engaged to her boyfriend, David Otunga, on her 27th birthday in Los Angeles, but the vocal siren told ESSENCE.com exclusively that she and her fiancé have been too busy with upcoming projects to even think about planning a ceremony.
“We were like, ‘Okay let’s get married.’ But then I’m thinking, Wait a minute. How do you do this? Where do you start?” Hudson told ESSENCE.com. “I don’t have a clue at all where to begin. Plus, there’s so much going on—he has whatever he has going on and I got all of this going with my projects, so it will take some time before anything can be done.”
Otunga, a Harvard law school graduate and Chi-town native better known as “Punk” from VH1’s “I Love New York 2,” presented his dream girl with a Neil Lane diamond ring. Hudson ended her relationship with a longtime beau of nearly a decade earlier this year and was rumored to have accepted his proposal and subsequently ended the engagement.
“I have never been engaged; that was a rumor,” said Hudson. “[According to the media] I’ve been engaged, Lord I don’t know how many times to Lord knows how many different people. For the record, this is my first engagement.”
The “Sex and the City” and “Dreamgirls” beauty is gearing up for the release of her self-titled debut album on September 30. And fans can catch the former “American Idol” contestant in theaters this fall in “The Secret Life of Bees” opposite label mate Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo and Dakota Fanning. The film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) and coproduced by Will Smith.
