They sang that “all you have to do is dream,” and it seems to have worked. Today’s Golden Globe nomination announcement gave “Dreamgirls“, the Tony Award-winning musical-turned-movie, five of its coveted nominations. It was nominated for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy; Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy ( Beyoncé Knowles); Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Murphy); Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson); and Best Original Song (“Listen” performed by Knowles).
“Dreamgirls’” Hudson, a former American Idol contestant who has been living her own dream since landing the movie role of Effie White, received her good news while waiting in the green room at NBC’s “The Today Show“. She told “Today“’s Matt Lauer that she and her companions “screamed before they even heard” her name called. Later, Hudson’s belted out a rousing performance of “I Am Changing,” a song from the movie that seemed to accurately surmise the singer’s whirlwind rise to fame. After holding the last note, a visibly moved Hudson fanned her face with both hands and exhaled as she blinked back tears and graciously smiled.
Knowles called her “Dreamgirls” role “an opportunity of a lifetime for me” in a press statement released on Thursday. She continued, “I am so happy for the accolades being given to the movie as a whole. I was thrilled to work with Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, and I am happy to share these nominations with fellow nominees Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy.”
Murphy, also in a press statement, called his nominations “exciting and flattering that the Hollywood Foreign Press has acknowledged all the hard work that went in to Bill Condon’s “Dreamgirls“. I am happily humbled and honored.”
In other categories, actors Will Smith and Forest Whitaker will vie for Best Actor in a Drama for their roles in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “The Last King of Scotland“, respectively. They will face off against Leonardo DiCaprio, who is twice nominated in the category for both “Blood Diamond” and “The Departed“, and Peter O’Toole for his role in “Venus“.
British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is nominated twice this year, is vying for Best Supporting Actor for his big screen role as a flamboyant drag queen-turned-footwear designer in “Kinky Boots“. He’ll also face stiff competition in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Movie Made for Television category for his role in HBO’s (“Tsunami: The Aftermath”). Andre Braugher (“Thief”), Michael Ealy (“Sleeper Cell: American Terror”) as well as Ben Kingsley, Robert Duvall, Matthew Perry and Bill Nighy are the other nominees.
“Hotel Rwanda’s” Sophie Okonedo, who plays Ejiofor’s wife in “Tsunami: The Aftermath“, is also up for Best Actress in the same category.
The 64th Annual Golden Globe awards will be given out on January 15, 2007.
