7 Things We’re Talking About

From Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj’s “Flawless” collaboration to Malia Obama at Lollapalooza, here are the 7 hot topics we can’t get enough of this week.

SHOW TRANSCRIPT

[MUSIC] Hello Essence. This is 7 things we're talking about. I am Dana Johnson and I am very pleased to let you know that we have lots of tea to spill this week. So let's get started with one of America's newest sweethearts, Michael Strahan. Many of you know him as the Good Morning America QE or the other half of Kelly and Mike. But for those of you out there that had to do some Sunday football. Bonding time with your other half. Know him as the hard hitting defensive end from the New York Giants. Strahan was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame where he closed out the day's activities with a 34 minute speech. He had many accomplishments in his NFL career however, that news seems to have common bond because all the blogs are really talking about is his split from Hollywood Exes star Nicole Murphy. [MUSIC] [INAUDIBLE] It is unfortunate that being honored for your, having decades of commitment to your craft, and actually being good at it, could be overshadowed by gossip and speculation. Anyway, moving right along. Queen Bee took the world by storm when her self titled 5th album, Beyonce, dropped without any warning, and produced hit after hit. One of the album's biggest singles, Flawless. I woke up like this was recently remixed with Rap's first lady, Nicki Minaj and the streets are definitely talking. Nicki's addition to the track adds Peppa, but the real fire is Beyonce's rap intro where she addresses elevator gait. In a rather slick way to quote, of course [COUGH] goes down when there's a billion dollars on an elevator. Considering 99% of us have never been on that elevator, we're just gonna have to take your word for it, Beyoncé. But despite that incident, the Carters are slaying it with their On the Run tour, and have been extra lovey dovey on stage. I get in a little quality family time at the recent opening of Jay's mother's restaurant in Jersey. Let's just let the Carters live people. Sixteen year old Malia Obama was spotted at popular musical festival Lollapalooza in Chicago. Of course she had security up the wazoo but many fans who recognized the first daughter were surprised by her presence. I mean, she is a teenager, enjoying music concerts, nothing crazy to see here folks. Keep it movin right along. But we asked you what you thought during our daily Essence debates on Twitter and here's what you had to say. At staged on purpose said I like that when I hear something about them, it's positive and usually something they're involved in that's age appropriate. While at Sjonia Harper said, they're children and shouldn't be the subject of. Gossip or political discourse. Leave them alone. Join our daily Twitter conversation at 12:30 @ESSENCE_Debates and see if your comments make it on air. Congratulations to Essence covergirl Alicia Keys as she and her husband hit producer and musician Swiss Beat are expecting their second child. The talented couple made the announcement via Instagram on their 4th wedding anniversary. Congratulations and we cannot wait to see this bouncing baby boy or girl. Now we have an update on our previous Ebola feature. Two American Ebola patients have returned to the United States and are being treated in Atlanta. Now brace yourself. Before you break out the hand sanitizer and lock yourself indoors it is important to know that Ebola is exchanged through blood and bodily fluids. It's not gonna fly through the air and attack you, plus those identified are being isolated and contained. The presence of the 2 patients has many in an uproar, but per the CDC, this does not mean the U.S. has an outbreak in any way, shape, or form. We will keep our eyes on this story as it develops essence. Eric Garner, a Staten Island father of 6, was tragically killed last month after an NYPD officer put the asthmatic Garner into an illegal chokehold. His death was recently ruled a homicide by the New York City medical examiner's office and Mayor Bill Deblasio has vowed to work with all authorities involved to ensure a fair and justified outcome. On the day of his death, bystanders state Garner was breaking up a fight when he caught the eye of the police. The NYPD claims officers had previously targeted Garner for selling untaxed. Individual cigarettes. Garner wanted to know why he was being harassed. And the incident, which was caught on video has been circulating throughout the media. It ended with Garner paying for that query with his life. We will bring you updates on this story as the investigation and case continues. On a much, much brighter and lighter note, Dwayne Wade and Gabby Union announced their nuptials via a super cute save the date video. It shows the moment Wade got down on one knee and proposed. Put a ring on it. To a very happy Gabrielle Union. The happy couple is set to tie the knot August 30th in Miami. But there are no details about where. Guess who will be picked up and then taken to a top secret location? They've already banned their guests from using cameras, phones, and social media during the wedding and reception. I think it's a smart move here people, and I'm sure there'll be. Plenty of security. Well, there you have it. Seven things we're talking about this week. I will see you here next time on Essence.com.
