Black Marriage: Congress Talks State of Emergency

Washington, D.C., representative Eleanor Holmes Norton isn't sitting quietly by as the institution of marriage erodes in the Black community, according to the Washington Post. During the Congressional Black Caucus she hosted the forum "Single Women, Unmarried Men: What Has Happened to Marriage in the Black Community?" to a standing-room-only crowd eager to hear. Many were startled to hear how the number of Black children born to single moms rose from 30 percent in 1970 to 70 percent today.

"For the first time, young Black women cannot necessarily look forward to marriage as the next natural state of life," Norton said. "They are finding themselves without comparable mates."

Stay tuned as ESSENCE.com reports on marriage in the Black community and what must be done to turn things around.--CJ

Cece, I agree 100%! The color doesn't matter. It's a damn shame that marriage is not respected and real relationships continue to decrease. People don't want to make a committment when so many people are willing to cheat. There is a strong loss of trust among women and men. I hope we can build these relationships up, marriage is a good thing!! Its too bad, how society has tainted the meaning of it and labels it as being locked up in a relationship! Ignore the color, its not what matters. Find the right person for you because we all want someone who treats us with respect and love. Whether its black, white, puertorican, Indian, Asian, who cares!!!! I love them all!

I have decided to choose love and that means that my mate may not be black. Black women please open your mind, we are always complaining about not finding a man especially a black man. Stop looking at color and we will probably find love and marriage.
