Breaking Up: When Celebrity Couples Call It Quits

shaqcelebsplits_article_WEBUSETHIS.jpg
November has been a big month for celebrity divorce news so far. Usher's split with wife Tameka Foster was confirmed, Toni Braxton and husband Keri Lewis called it quits, and just last week, news broke that basketball star Shaquille O'Neal's wife Shaunie filed for divorce. Gossip blogs have circulated suspicions of Shaq in an affair.

The divorce rate among superstars has always been higher than that of everyday people, but while the recession has caused a decline in separation, it would seem that celebrity divorce is on the rise. Relationships expert Lauren Lake weighs in on why famous marriages fail, on the O'Neal's split and what's best for the kids.

ESSENCE.com: Why the high rate of celebrity divorces during the recession?
Lauren Lake: Well, [celebs] can afford to get divorced. With the recession, people are sticking together more, but also, divorce is expensive. Celebrities still have that opportunity because they have a little bit more financial stability.

E: What about having a relationship in the public eye and questions of infidelity arising, like in the O'Neal's case?
Lake: The rumors and the innuendoes and the tabloids can really wreak havoc on a relationship. ...There's also the temptation from people. There are tons of people that will date Shaq whether he's married or not. Respecting the sanctity of a relationship is super difficult.  But we've also heard the rumors of [Shaunie's] infidelity, so we don't really know who did what and it's easy to shine the light on Shaq.

E: Shaunie's filed for divorce in LA. Some say it's for a better settlement. Comments?
Lake: California is a community property state. That means all marital assets are split 50/50 regardless of what you individually brought in. If that's the case, there's a lot of money at stake. Even if she's not [looking for money] her attorneys will advise her on what strategies are best.

E: What's your advice for celebrity couples on how to deal with children and divorce?
Lake: It's stressful enough for children to deal with a divorce, much less to let it play out on the internet, on Facebook and Twitter. The parents have to be particularly careful of what they put out in the public. ...Also, be careful of where you are running around with the next person you're with because someone could snap a picture of that.

Wow! These days people marry for the wrong reasons. What happened to couple's honoring their marriage vows? In for these marriages to work, "God" must be the head.

Interesting when celebs divorce. I feel for the children and hope that parents can be mature to do the job for the children no matter what is going on between them.
My other comment is about the Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian marriage. The reported items she requested in their pre-nup. If it is true I am amazed. I could be wrong, but if that was a Black woman demanding those things then we are gold-diggers. I know you can't help who you fall in love with and what you are attracted to, but they always go and marry other than us. I guess I can't be mad because the media promotes it by placing Black men surrounded by other than Black women. I guess we are somewhere with an attitude.

Who cares if celebrities break up? Why should the world stop because two overpaid, spoiled people cannot get along anymore? Focus on our own lives rather than worry about other folks relationships.

Why have one article about a happy couple and below a GALLERY of failed marriages. WHO puts the web page together?
With all the negativity blacks get from all other sources of media about how bleek our relationships are WHY would Essence choose to have A SPREAD of failure and dig as far back as Ike and Tina to prove WHAT POINT?
What about a little positivity about the black marriages that have stood the test OF TIME?!! My goodness you would think with it being the holidays SOMEONE would want to get on board to uplifting our people instead of casting another dim light.

It's interesting how with all the negative publicity blacks get in general...how WE are always portrayed as dysfunctional on some level where family goes that Essence wouldn't HIGHLIGHT the HAPPY MARRIAGES of black couples and not emphasis splits to the point of having to dig up Ike and Tina.
Celebrities are not exempt from problems or divorce...they are people just like anyone else.

I pray for Shaq & Shaunie o'neil I pray that whatever is going on between them. can be worked out for their marriage they have a beautful family. God bless the o'neil's

Alot of celebrities to me seem to get married for the wrong reasons. They to me don't reall take their marriages seriously. First of all, marriage is work and alot of them just don't want to do the work. Secondly, to me, God have to be in it; by that I mean each partner need to have a relationship with God and they need to be in prayer asking God to give them directions for their lives. What God truly join together, no one or anything will be able to tear them apart. Oten times we seek who we think is right for us, but we don't seek God wisdom on this issue!

I was really hoping that Shaq & Shaunie O'Neil could work things out; however, both parties have to be dedicated to making the relationship work. I'm a traditionalist who believes that "stable marriages" are an important foundation to building a healthy society. Children develop their most fundamental attitudes about love, relationships, trust and commitment within the family unit. Divorce, although traumatic, can also be shrewdly managed depending upon the emotional and psychological maturity of the couple involved. May GOD cover them and their children. I wish them the best of luck. Peace.
