Greatest Risk for Contracting HIV May Surprise You

BlackwomanHIV_article.jpg

The statistics are alarming. While African Americans make up only 12 percent of the population, we account for 61 percent of new HIV cases among all women. Some areas have been particularly hard hit. In Washington D.C., for instance, African American women account for 90 percent of newly HIV-infected females. Most of those cases are contracted through heterosexual contact.

For years, many Black women believed HIV was being spread through our community by men who were having sex with both women and men -- men who were secretly on the down low. According to a series of recent studies, it may be time to rethink that assumption. Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention at the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, says the fact is Black women are contracting HIV from men who have a variety risk factors, some we may be overlooking.

"What we are seeing now is that we're in the midst of a crisis as far as HIV in the African American community is concerned," Fenton said yesterday on National Public Radio's Tell Me More. "It's really important that we understand why and where the infection is spreading so we can take effective action. And part of that response must be to address some of the myths and misinformation."

According to Fenton, there are a variety of ways in which African American women are becoming infected and having sex with a DL man is not high on the list. "The reality is that bisexual men only account for very, very small proportion of the overall Black male population," says Fenton. "Our research suggests that about two percent of Black men will report being bisexually active." Fenton says one in five Black women contracts HIV through intravenous drug use, while 80 percent contract the virus through sex with an infected male partner. "And their partner may become infected through either injecting drugs themselves, or through having multiple [female] sexual partners," Fenton adds.

Instead of focusing on the myth of the DL man, Fenton urges women to look at the risk factors that are most prevalent in the community, such as having unprotected sex with a partner who is having sex with multiple women.

Fenton also addressed the commonly-held belief that some African American men are entering prison HIV negative and coming out HIV positive. In fact, says Fenton, "Although there is HIV transmission on going in prisons, it's not at high levels as had been previously thought. What we actually believe is occurring is that there are a number of HIV-infected individuals who become incarcerated. So HIV is going from the community to the prison sector. "

More to the point, explains Fenton, the disproportionate rate of incarceration among African American men means that there are fewer eligible men for women to partner with. Because of this, some men feel they have more opportunity to engage in multiple concurrent sexual relationships, while some women feel less empowered to insist on condom use, fearing they will lose their partner. "Black women are bearing a disproportionate burden of this disease compared to their White or Hispanic counter parts, " says Fenton. "It's really important we understand how this infection is spreading in our community."

Im tired of people who thing Marraige is the key to all things married or not we both male and female need to protect ourselvs.

black women if he does not care enough about your safety to rap it up then you need to move on.

Essence, you had a huge two part series on this a few years ago. Will you have another huge series about this subject that reveals the truth? Or will this be a back story because it is not as sensational as the whole DL phenomenon? The truth may not sell magazines but it will save lives.

stop having sex before marriage.

I know it is hard to find a good man these days, for what ever reason. But, as black women we must understand and accept that compromising our health is not an option. If we continue this type of behavior, soon we will become extinct. Our children and families need us, especially if males are not present. Ladies, always put your self in a position to choose rather than being in a position to be chosen. Please ask him to wear condoms and or be tested for HIV. Nights of pleasure is not worth the pain from your loss. Good luck to all!

hearing all that stuff just grosses me out i couldn't even read the rest. whether through drugs or sleeping with people its all gross and its a shame that thats in our communities like that. and then we want to rap and sing about all the drug use and sex(fornication) like its a good thing. wow and people wonder why they go to hell.

Well, I for one know so many people who have never been tested and never asked their partners if they were positive let alone get tested. It is crazy how so much ignorance lives in this world with all the information available. Well, if you don't get tested and have never discussed it with your partner how can you say you don't have it or he/she doesn't have it? I have been guilty of this a time or two so I can speak from experience. I am a realist and can be honest about the state of things going on around me. I really believe that the largest contribution of the growing ppulation of HIV infections is DENIAL!!!!! No one wants to admit to anything!! EVER!! We always want to place blame on everyone and everything except ourselves and our own actions. You can't look at someone and think they look healthy. That's pure ignorance at it's best and the biggest violation. I love sex as much as the next person, but I have chosen to not give it up to someone who I haven't developed some level of love for. Call me a stick in the mud if you'd like, but I'm an HIV negative one as well. And I don't have a boatload of kids either. As a matter of fact I am 36y/o widow with no children. So, it's all in what you choose to do. Take responsibility for your actions. Women have to stop letting good sex be the decision making factor in our lives.

As a BLACK woman this was in prison for three years, this is a true statement.
Lets say that 100 women release today are negative for HIV and see these ladies 1 year later and 50 of them are HIV positive because they had relations with in that year with a man whom was also recently release from prison. Women are tested upon entering and leaving no matter how much time you do.
LADIES ALWAYS PROTECT YOURSELF....DOWN LOW IS NOT ONLY GOING ON OUT IN THE REAL WORLD BUT ITS ALIVE BEHIND THOSE WALLS.....

Yes, I, You, and me need to be more honest. I personally slept with my now husband on the first date. He admitted that he was still sleeping with someone unprotected. Though I did not sleep with another man in the past eight years since we've dated and married. He did in fact. I'm trust keeping it real people. Like many sister's I went to church like nothing happened. I slept with my husband (UNPROTECTED) even after knowing he cheated, while we were still dating. Nevertheless he had an on-going sexual relationshipe with his braider for two months or so. Ladies, I made bad choices and so did my husband.

Too many black women are having unprotected sex with multiple partners. This is the reason why HIV rates are the highest among black women. Obviously, black men are a contributing factor to the HIV crisis, but black women need to be more honest about their sexual activities. If you are a women who has multiple sex partners you have to use condoms like it's your second skin. Too many black men and women want to behave like adolescents. You can't go raw if you want to have multiple sex partners. You have to behave as responsible adults, your life depends on it.

This article is SO right! I am so sick of Black women (of which I am one BTW) saying that there are a lot of down low men "giving" us HIV. C'mon! How in the hell can someone give you a deadly STD unless you let him have sex with you condomless! Open your mouth and stop unconsciously killing yourself all for the sake of keeping a man! If he leaves you because you won't let him "hit it raw", then good riddance! I can bet you that he will still go find another woman and sleep with her even if you let him - which opens you up to the disease. We've got to STOP letting the eligible Black men think that they can get away with treating us like semen receptacles that they can throw away at will because there's another one waiting in the wings. I will NOT put myself at risk anymore, at least.

can somebody send this aticle to media takeout because theres alot of selfhate and misguided information on that site
