First Lady Diaries: The First Lady's Poll Numbers Falling

michellepolls_article_WEB.jpg
Not that she was elected to public office or anything, but, according to recent polls...Michelle Obama's numbers are down.

A recent Gallup poll says the First Lady's favorability has slid 11 points since last March, from 72 percent to 61 percent. In a study from South Carolina's Winthrop University, which looked at her approval ratings in 11 Southern states, while nearly 78 percent of Democrats had a favorable opinion of Mrs. Obama, only 26.2 percent of Republicans did.

The ratings fall comes despite Mrs. Obama's decidedly non-controversial activities such as hosting hundreds of schoolchildren at the White House, most recently to launch a mentoring program for teenage girls, starting a White House garden to advocate healthy eating, and amplifying the importance of serving military families. On the other hand, she has occasionally used her platform to talk about President Obama's goals for healthcare reform, so maybe that's behind the dip in numbers.

Or is it that she hasn't been substantial enough? In a recent Newsweek essay, Allison Samuels wrote that she should take on heavier issues, arguing that military families and gardening will not build a lasting legacy.

"I want to know how she feels about children killing children back in her hometown of Chicago. Or whether she has any ideas about how to stop the ever-increasing numbers of African-American women falling victim to AIDS," Samuels writes. "These too-often-neglected issues need a face like Michelle's."

All the polling on Mrs. Obama initially surprised me, given that she's not in charge of White House policy or legislation. But it's not an unprecedented move. People were also polled on Laura Bush, who maintained a high approval rating (and so nobody really talked about it).

What do you think--as the first African-American First Lady, should Mrs. Obama elevate topics that affect our community by giving her stance on crime and HIV, or is it fine for her to focus on more traditional issues?

By the way Essence. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for even giving this sick insult of an article airspace on your website. Shame on you. Just remember that, the next time you want to interview the first lady. Disgusting and insulting article. No matter what the Obama's do, there will be racists and ignants who will always tear them down. I'm all for freedom of speech but please remember how many of our brothers and sisters died for freedom. And whilst many of us may have our views on Obama, please remember that this family has paved the way for millions of African-American's the world over for centuries to come

Diane 72 like many of the negative posters are not black, so don't assume that because they visit a black site that they are. They are racist rednecks who troll the internet night and day to post venomous remarks about our First Lady. They aren't fit to wipe her boots and they know it so they slip and slide around and make out like they are a republican conservative sister just to get a rise out of us. Don't fall for it.

You're a little angry there Blackscholar...it's alright it's FRIDAY, so go on and get yourself some milk and cookies and reach into your happy place :-)

Respecfully,

Mrs. Obama(or shall I say, First Lady of The United States[FLOTUS]]) continues to perpetuate a negative stereotype as nothing more than a "Hottentot Venus" to the point that all of her clothing have to emphasive her protruding gluteus maximus. If one was not familiar with her formal education(i.e., BA and JD) one would be so inclined to vaguely assume that she didn't have an formal education due to the lack of substantive issues she have addressed. In fact, it appears as if she's more concerned about galavanting in Europe and Asia as compared to ventuaring over to Iraq or Afghanistan to visit the troops. Finally, we have yet to see FLOTUS publicly address and specific issue regarding native born Blacks in the country. Until this occurs, I will continue to view her as nothing more than and "Empty Skirt"(no pun intended) and her husband as nothing more than a "Black Judas Goat".

By the way Essence, you magazine should is a continuation of visual imagery in which scores of Black women who alter themselves physically in an effort to appear more Eurocentric looking.

Ok this is according to who??? You know it amazing how no matter what happens the media wants to find some type of fault with The First Lady.Too bad it doesn't really mean anything. To me and my family she's still an Awesome woman of God.We still admire her courage and her strength and she will always have High Ratings with us!!!!

To attack Michelle Obama is to attack her husband and the idea that there can be a black couple in the White house. These people who don't like Michelle is the same rednecks, that lynch us for fun. I love Michelle this magazine is Not owned by us. I love Michelle......

Can anyone who participated in the poll please leave a post!

Don't sweat it y'all. I live in SC and it is the armpit of racism and white privilege. SMDH! This poll isn't worth the toilet paper it is printed on. Rock on Pres and Mrs O. I'll see y'all at the polls in 2012. I have had enough of haters.

i'm wondering why does she have to do anything at all on any issue. i never heard of mrs bush doing a darn thing on anything (also previous first ladies) so why are we so concern about michelle obama doing something. but to answer the question (since she is doing something) should she focus on our community more(because we sure need help!). that would be nice we really need some guidance these days because we are a people that need a leader in my opinion. otherwise we act lost. but then again thats not her job sooooooooo. i don't know i'm not to sure on this subject.

If I had known that this was written by the same woman who attacked a little girl over her hair I would have actually felt it had a shred of credibility. Allison Samuel's is moot in my book. Instead of waiting for Mrs. Obama to lead the way she has the ability to do the same thing instead of worrying about a child's hairstyle.

Diane 72 wishes he had a crumb of Mrs. Obama's poise, taste, femininity, intellect, good breeding, class, and sophistication. "Honey when you come from greatness, you're already successful, why do you think they created affirmative action? I'm sure that you benefited from it in some way. After all it takes an affirmative action recipient and a ghetto fabulous individual to know another. Somehow you failed on that one honey, because Mrs. Obama is more than that. When people who think and act like you remove the hatred of others from your eyes, you'll begin to see what you have been in denial about all along" I think Diane 72 is still in shock that there are professional people of color because he has never seen them in the mainstream or urban media before and this is new to him. We exist baby and regardless of if we came from a ghetto or the farm, it is not where you come from that determines your outcome but what is within you that determines your future. It's must be very intimidating for him to see so many successful Americans of African descent all of a sudden.

I live in the South and I was not not contacted. Maybe they skipped my demographic group and solely concentrated on others. Many Southern Caucasians are still stuck in the time warps from the Antebellum days to the Jim Crow Era and still have not realised that it's 2009. Regardless of the numerous skyscrapers that dot the landscape from D.C. to Houston or the façade that they are now sophisticated and tolerant, ignorance and stupidity is just what it is and it'll take more than this imagery of a united South to change the mind-sets of these individuals. Anyway, people are you going to let groups ran by the mainstream media and the dominant culture determine who you'll support? Who's in the White house? Case closed.

DID ANYONE REMEMBER ANY DAMN THING LAURA BUSH DID IN THE WHITE MR AND MRS OBAMA ARE DOING THE BEST THAT THEY CAN DO I AM PRETTY SURE IF ANY OF YOU WAS STRONG ENOUGH TO BE THE FIRST LADY YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN SO JUST SUPPORT THEM AND DAMN COMPLAINING GOOD LORD

I am sure Mrs. Obama isn't concern about what people think or have to say about her. She is comfortable in her on skin. If those who talk negative about her and her family was comfortable in their skin than they wouldn't find fault with others, especially President and Mrs.Obama. My advise to you is this: Get A Life.

"affirmative action background and poor taste in fashion is reflected by these accurate new polls"You are such a dumba ss and strange but so funny.. I enjoy laughing at you alot.
