'Frustrated' Teacher Chops Off Student's Braid

In recent "what the...?" news, a Milwaukee teacher was fined $175 for cutting off one of her student's beaded braids. According to CNN.com, the Congress Elementary School teacher was frustrated because Lamya Cammon, 7, kept playing with her hair. Cammon said that the teacher called her to the front of the room, and then used a pair of classroom scissors to chop off one of her braids. "She threw it away," said the adorable first grader. "And she said , 'Now what you gonna go home and say to your momma?'" Justifiably outraged, Cammon's mother confronted the teacher, who's response was, "Well, I apologize. I was frustrated." The scissor-happy teacher was slapped with a disorderly conduct fine, but she's still teaching her first grade class. Meanwhile, the principal has moved Cammon to a different classroom.

oh hell no she is dead wrong for that. She has no rite to cut that child hair just because she was playing with it. I dont no what going on with teacher these day!! But i woulda cuss her out if that was my child.

Their is no way i would let a teacher get away with something ike that. Yes the child was wrong for steady playing with her hair, but the teacher could have done other things such as call the parent, made the student change her card or anything elese. Teachers and parents are ment to teach the kids right from wrong. now what would happen if a student in that class does this to another student or even the teacher?

Her hair was obviously a distraction,
The little girl should have been taught that we are more than our hair, and that education is vital-not a new hairstlye.

children should be taught to listen and pay attention in school. That is one problem with black children. They are having their way to much. Parents are letting them do what they want to do. Leave the teacher alone, her job is stressful enough. The child has not be taught at home how to behave in school. Blame the parents

The mother should press charges against the teach , school district, and anyone else who thinks this type of behavior is acceptable /normal .
This teacher should lose her job and not be allowed to teach anywhere. She had NO RIGHT to to do that to that child just because she was playing with her hair? That is ridiculous! She needs to undergo theraphy & learn how to deal with children.

This teacher assaulted a 5 year old student. After her beat down; she should have been handcuffed in front of these same students and hauled off to jail

That... is exactly... how people get shot.

THIS TEACHER IS OUTRAGEOUS! IN A SETTING WHERE CHILDREN ARE SUPPOSE TO DISPLAY BE TAUGHT SELF CONTROL, SHE SHOWED NONE! SHE SHOULD BE FIRED AND FORCED TO PERSUE A NEW CAREER.
OUTRAGEOUS!!!

This is a clear case of assault upon a minor by a "supposedly" trained professional. The fact that this child continued to play with her braids should not have distracted this "professional" from continuing with her lesson. The teacher is a frustrated individual who attacked a child with a pair of scissors. The parents should have filed a criminal assault charge against this teacher and demand that she be removed from teaching small children. This child is doing what children of this age are expected to do and the teacher should have had more retraint. If the child's playing with her braids was a continual problem the teacher should have sent a note home to the parents and they could address the situation. In no way was this teacher supposed to cut this child's hair off. If I were this child's parents I would file an assault charge against this teacher and petition for him/her to be removed from teaching small children. Instead they punish the child a second time by removing her from the classroom. Idiots, all of them. I won't be a bit surprised is this teacher does something more drastic to another child being that she got away with this assault. Put a pair of scissors against any part of my child's body and I'm coming after you.

This lady grossly misrepresents educators everywhere! The eighth amendment speaks to cruel and unusual punishment, and for the life of me I can not think of a more cruel or unusual action. It bothers me to think what would have occurred if this teacher were frustrated and mad. Psychology teaches us that we are allowed our own personal space zones in which this teacher violated this child's. Law enforcement teaches us that we have a reactionary zone, which this teacher violated also. Our parents teaches us daily no one is to touch you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. I have several concerns regarding this matter, the first being the" educated educator" in the classroom lost complete control, in that as an educator you teach items and their respective places and uses from day one. Teachers have the innate ability to shape a child's outlook on life. In this single instant this teacher taught this child to how to use a weapon to get what she wanted. (Lesson plan title- How to use everyday classroom supplies to cause harm.) Lesson Objectives-1. Students will learn how to use scissors to cut their classmates hair. 2. Students will learn to use their pencils to poke classmates eyes out that break line. 3. Students will use their cap erasers to shove down classmates throats that speak out of turn. Assessments- Teacher made test(10 multiple choice questions on supplies used) Classroom discussions-to ensure students understand that they can use what they already have to get what they want. Culminating Activity- Students and Teacher will read Essence blogs about people that made the absolute wrong choice about their profession. It sickens me to think that an educator would not only think of such a horrible thing to do to a child, but also act on it and in front of other children. The big picture is really scary, because not only did this teacher abuse this student, she also abused every child in that classroom. I do not understand how the school system is allowing her to even walk through the doors of a school to influence, abuse, and torture other children. To the parents in this school-IF SHE DID IT ONCE SHE WILL DO IT AGAIN! It is my sincere hope that she will be punished to the highest degree possible. I also hope her parents realize that this will be pushed under the rug if they don't continue to speak out about this unthinkable act. I am sitting here scared to death, because my child had a stoke and she can't talk because of it, and if that were my child I might not have ever found out about it. We as parents are supposed to protect our children at all cost, they look to us for guidance, love, and support. I urge everyone that reads this to call that school board to keep them from just letting this go as a 175.00 mishap.

Hi Everyone,

Just found this site and thought it might be useful to chat to people who are trying to accomplish the same as me!

I spend too much of my life on the internet and look forward to chatting to you all and picking up and sharing ideas along the way!

That was definitely an invasion of that little girls personal space and the damage may last for years. Especially if the teacher was other than African American. Hair is a very personal issue and it does need to be addressed immediately as all the other outraged parnets have said. But also Im glad that the mother handled it the way she did cause I would have scalped her if it were my child out of pure anger and out rage. Sadly even though we can take a person to court it doesnt always erase the negatice feeling harbored by the situation. Hopefully that beautiful little girl will grow up and understand that just because we are adults doesnt mean that we always act like adults. Example judge that flattened a ladies tires for parking in his spot. We are all human but if you cant at least be civil enough to show a child kindness then she needs to quit. And honestly I have a terrible temper thats why im not a teacher but iam a mother and i try to consider them first.

The teachers behavior is unacceptable!

The way the district resolved the matter is unacceptable and I recommend that the parent take legal action with the help of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the ACLU, and/or the Southern Law Poverty Center. The rights of the student to be in a safe learning environment have been violated, as well as, her physical and psychological boundaries. As a former teacher, I cannot imagine, for any reason, thinking that I ever had the right to physically or psychologically abuse a helpless, defenseless child.

This teacher has a real problem with children of color, in this case, a black child. The teacher took advantage of this young child, because she would not have handled it the same way had the child been a high school student and able to defend herself.

The school administration and school district have taken a very cavalier, lasse faire attiude about this matter and must be sent a strong message that their actions and handling of this matter is just plain wrong.

The parents and leaders in this school community should unite, organize and demand that the teacher be removed from teaching in any classroom. I agree with the one comment made, "she is unstable"!

Just remember, today it's a 7 year old black child who is being harmed, physically and psychologically. Tomorrow, it could be a 7 year old brown, yellow, red and yes, even a white child abused.

Come on people, don't sit on the sideline and allow this teacher, the school administration and the system off the hook in the poor handling of this incident. Raise your energy, voices and actions to make a positive impact for this child's future. This is the type of behavior that children are subjected to way to often and NOT ONE adult fights for them. Also, the actions, behavior and attitude of this teacher is typical of what is wrong in too many of our public and private school classrooms and is a major contributor to the "pushout" and "dropout" rates in schools. Our children are often more "at risk" at school than in any other place!
