Hometown Hero: Denise Wiggins

In Huntsville, Alabama, there is a hardworking mother of three who is acknowledged for helping out her neighbors with their light bills, taking time out of her day to volunteer organizing and cleaning elderly citizens' homes, and going to businesses asking others if they need any help. She will proudly tell anyone she is a custodian at Weatherly Heights Elementary, and yes, "I can say I honestly love my job." Her name is Denise Wiggins.

ESSENCE.com caught up with the busy worker about why she gives so much of herself, no matter what, and what other people might be able to learn from her.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Celebrates Judith Jamison

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to New York City Center for a five-week (December 2, 2009 through January 3, 2010) season show and 20-city domestic tour celebrating Judith Jamison as she moves into her 20th year as artistic director, also making it her last year when she steps down as sole director in 2011. In its 50-year history, AAADT has been under the direction of only two people--Alvin Ailey and Jamison.--NH

Kenya Runner Sets Chicago Record

On this past chilly Sunday morning, the Olympic gold medalist Sammy Wanjiru began the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, two hours, five minutes and 41 seconds later, the 22-year-old Kenyan set the Chicago and American marathon records--by one second. What almost cost him the record-setting second, and the $100,000 in winnings--a wave to the crowd before crossing the tape. Wanjiru, not knowing that he almost blew it, told the Sun-Times: ''I waved the hand because I was very happy."--JG
