How Many More Shaniya's Are There?

shaniya-davis-red-gown-picture-300x425.jpg

A rose colored casket adorned with hundreds of flowers sat at the front of the church. A casket so small that it served as a vivid reminder that inside laid the body of a small defenseless child. Her name was Shaniya Davis. More than two thousand people packed the church, and hundreds peered through the windows to catch a glimpse of the homegoing ceremony. Shaniya's father, Bradley Lockhart who was not scheduled to speak, got up and encouraged the community to not get angry about the situation because he believed that God had a reason for taking Shaniya so prematurely. He then turned to his daughter's rose-colored casket and said lovingly "I know you're going to be waiting for me [in heaven]. I'll see you when I get there."

Mr. Lockhart's strength in the midst of such a horrific tragedy is commendable because most of us would have succumbed to anger and rage had something like this happened to our child. In fact, most of us didn't know Shaniya, but the emotion that her tragic story evoked was paralyzing. She was able to give a face to something so sadistic and perverted that most choose not to acknowledge...that everyday, hundreds and thousands of children are sold into the sex trade. It's a phenomenon known as sex trafficking.

There is no consistent face of a trafficking victim. They are both male and female. They are of all ages, races, and socio-economic backgrounds. However, although anyone can fall prey to trafficking, victims tend to come from vulnerable populations such as runaways, at-risk youth, drug addicts, the poor, and oppressed and marginalized groups. Traffickers often target individuals in these populations because they are reportedly easiest to recruit and control. These criminals are driven by two primary factors: high profits and low risk. The FBI was recently able to recover 52 children that had been sold into prostitution. Consequently, over 500 traffickers were successfully convicted. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg because reports suggest that well over 100,000 children and young women are sex trafficked every day. What makes Shaniya's story all the more disturbing is that it is her very own mother that stands accused of selling her precious baby girl into sexual slavery. Despicable, nauseating, infuriating...but a reality of the world in which we live.

What I'd like for people to understand is that no one is safe when it comes to this issue. Just as you get up routinely each day to go to work, pedophiles wake up to plan and strategize just how they can lure and molest children. They are extremely adept at doing just that. That is why the statistics show that a child is abducted every 40 seconds in our nation. Moreover, nearly 50 percent are African American. There is a false sense of security that many of us tend to have because we feel that our circle of elite friends and family, and large brick homes buffer us from the inherent cruelty of the world. However, the statistics do not lie.

Sadly, there are millions of Shaniya's across the world. They have no voice. They have no power. They have no face, and until recently, the wider public refused to even acknowledge that their stories were legitimate. Shaniya's story helped to change this. So, I agree with her father. God had a plan, and was ready to bring an angel home because her job had been accomplished. May you rest in peace baby girl.

I have tried to make sense of this whole situation in vain. The picture of the animal carrying this little bundle has left such a traumatizing memory too hard to erase. What did this little baby call him, daddy? Uncle? Did she know the degree of hurt that this animal was going to inflict on her? Even as I try to express myself, I can’t stop crying.
My oh my!! God, why did you even let this happen to her? Just why? The pain is unbearable. What mother would think of hurting a child that she labored for in that gruesome manner?
NOW, I am a faithful catholic who don’t believe in the death sentence but my mind tells me that, this man has no space to be here on earth. By the way, what punishment is befitting for this animal? Just what? As I sat in my sister in law’s house on thanksgiving, our whole conversation was about little Shaniya. She was so outraged that she wished, the animal will be handed over to her so that she could perform some jungle justice.
As she put it, her first step will be cutting his hot dog off before proceeding. I hope the jury or some lawyer will not come up with insanity plea. The man is just nothing but an animal and if given the chance, he will go lower and lower until he is able to get to a newborn. Yes, he can if we look at the animalistic features on his satanic face.
Please God, I know you said we should forgive 70X7.I am having a hard time attempting to forgive this animal less than once.
Little Shaniya, baby doll, rest in peace. Guess what? You are now with Jesus and will never be hurt because Jesus will not let anyone come close to you.
At last you are safe!!
Goodnite sweet heart.
I miss u even though I don’t know you.
My heart is just bleeding for you.

As a mother of 4 beautiful children, this is something that I could not begin to imagine doing. This article was an eye opener to what is going on in the world today, to what has been going on for decades and so many choose to turn the blind eye and the deaf ear. I pray for the family of Shaniya that they may be comforted in this tragic time as an innocent child was taken way too soon and in such a perverted manner. Thank you Gaetane for writing this article. Rest In Peace Little Angel - Shaniya Davis.

It's hard to put into words for most of us what Gaétane was able to say so beautifully. It is hard for good compassionate people to understand and believe that there are mothers out there that are void of any feeling or bonds with the children they bare. The average person is so sure that there is this maternal instinct in every women that when there is even a slight indication that she cares is enough to think she is OK. People who have a conscious do can not comprehend someone not having one. Unfortunately more and more these women are popping out of the woodwork. I feel more than ever the courts need to recognize this and stop giving children to the mothers just because they are their mothers. The sad thing in this case was the father was not forced through the courts to give her to her. He had the upper hand he had an advantage that most dads in that situation don't have. That is what makes this case so disturbing is he just handed her over without being forced by the court to do so.

It is so sad in these days and times that we do not have a better system that protects our children. I have three children of my own and find myself being so overprotective because I feel as though it will protect them better. But in all actuality you can't be with your child 100% of the day and a predator is waiting for any small chance to strike. I just hope I have instilled all I can in my children to protect themselves when they are not with me. Thank God for organizations like Peas In Their Pods who are looking out for our children and doing the best they can to keep them safe.

we must pray for her Father, he will never get over this. but he will get thru it with the help of the Lord. thanks to peasintheirpods.com for the great work ya'll do. God bless and enable ya'll to reach more people with this Great program
God Bless
WalterleeGeorge,

Across America, young black children are vanishing from schools, neighborhoods, homes. Where are they? Are they in escort agencies, strip clubs?
These beautiful children do get the attention by law enforcement, they do not get public outcry or media attention. Our children continue to fall through the cracks.
Isn't it time we all stand up and say enough is enough?

There are many issues in the black community we do not address. It is time to deal with all of them

Thank you for writing this piece. Your words captured everything I would like to say better than I could probably say it. We need to fight for our children and I pray that we don't just cry for a few weeks then go about our business and forget. While I don't believe her rape and murder is an act of God, I do believe she is now safe with God and that is the only piece of this story that gives me any peace. I have been changed by her story and I am now on a new path, a path I knew I should follow for many years now but am now determined to do in order to protect other children now and in the future.

I agree with you K.C., God is not the one to blame not everyone know who is the ruler of this world and who is behind everyday tragedies it is the devil himself,Satan. Even I know that and you know that.

We must start caring about our children.
Great article.
Human Trafficking must be stopped.

I agree with K.C. on November 25th comment...that was not an act of God!!!

This was a well done article. The subject is sad, but something must be done about it.

...continuing to pray for the family and Shaniya's soul.

I just wonder what were the circumstances that allowed the father to give the child back to the mother I read somewhere that he was tryna give the mom a chance, she was probably beging to have the girl with her and then once she got her wish, started on the down slide. They should have went to counceling before giving the child back, and what were the circumstances that the child was with the father in the begining so many unanswered questions....

My heart goes out to all the Shaniya's out there, this is an unimaginable tragedy. However, I HATE, and I mean HATE when people say things like, "God had a plan for her so he took her away." Would a loving God be so cruel to cause and allow such a tragedy because he had a plan? God is all- mighty, powerful, wise, just and has MYRIADS and MYRIADS of angels that He personally created to accomplish His will. So Please stop blaming God. This world is wicked, full of wicked people, because they are being influenced by the ruler of this world: satan the devil.
