The Editorial Department (News, Entertainment/Culture, Books, Health, Food, Relationships, Work and Wealth, Research, and Copy.)

The Editorial Department wants to ensure a meaningful and professional, experience for the selected intern. Applicants should have good writing skills. Be familiar with grammar and idiom, as well as the stylistic/artistic aspects of writing and editing.

Editorial intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting a Senior Editor in carrying out the duties that are related to the production of articles in the magazine
  • Researching, writing, copying and administrative tasks
  • In some instances, interns may be assigned to work on special projects

The Fashion and Beauty Departments are separate but have similar needs. They are each looking for interns. Both departments ask that the applicants be detail oriented with great style, focused, self-motivated and able to multitask. Fashion and Beauty intern responsibilities include:

  • Assisting editors and stylists as they prepare for photo shoots
  • Assisting staff with special projects
  • Performing moderate administrative work
  • Updating databases
  • Attending editorial meetings
  • Understanding and learning the market
  • Generating ideas for articles
  • In addition, interns may have the opportunity to attend photo shoots and press events with staff members.

The Art and Photo Department internship candidate must have passion for design and/or photography, be a team player, able to prioritize a heavy workload, able to multi-task, and have a strong knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Microsoft Suite. We prefer candidates who are currently obtaining a degree in graphic art, and design or photography/photojournalism. The Art and Photo Department intern responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating production
  • Photo research
  • Invoice and administrative tasks
  • Photocopy - basic office skill

ESSENCE.com internship candidates must be prepared to be a part of a fast-paced environment, where you will take the hands-on approach to learning the day-to-day operations. The ideal candidate must be Internet savvy, have good research skills, pays meticulous attention to detail, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as be a creative thinker. The ESSENCE.com department prefers candidates who are obtaining a degree in Design and Internet Technology, possess strong analytical skills, have a strong proficiency in journalism and online media with a working knowledgeable of industry trends and standards. You must also have knowledge of basic HTML, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office, and be Mac and PC literate. ESSENCE.com intern responsibilities include:

  • Traffic monitoring
  • Image optimization
  • Updating content for the websites
  • Organizing incoming and outgoing requests

The Publishing Department (Sales/Marketing, Public Relations, The Business Office)

The Sales/Marketing internship candidate must be a team player, able to prioritize a heavy workload, have ability to multi-task, and have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage. Must have excellent spelling, proofreading, and communications skills. Sales/Marketing prefers candidates who are currently obtaining a degree in public relations, communications, or business marketing. Sales/Marketing intern responsibilities include:

  • Administrative duties (setting up for meetings, errands, copying clips, etc.)
  • Assist with coordinating daily sales development/merchandising requests
  • Assist with weekly status report
  • Process sales development invoices

The Public Relations internship candidate must be a team player, able to prioritize a heavy workload, have the ability to multi-task, and have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The Public Relations department prefers a candidate currently obtaining a degree in public relations, communications or journalism.

Public Relations intern responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate/develop/update PR media lists
  • Administrative duties
  • Assist with drafting press releases/media alerts
  • Assist with coordinating daily media clippings
  • Research
  • Assist with final reports for The Essence Music Festival
  • Drafting media interview request/confirmation memos for ESSENCE staff
  • Assisting with monthly status report

The Business Office internship candidate must be a team player, able to prioritize a heavy workload, have ability to multi-task, and have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage. The Business Office prefers candidates who are currently obtaining a degree in business marketing, finance accounting or economics. The Business Office intern responsibilities include:

  • Excellent analytical and quantitative ability
  • Solid Excel and computer skills
  • Strong presentation (oral and written) skills
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy
