Essence Communications Inc. Summer Internship Program is a 9-week paid learning experience where you'll receive on the job training that will enhance your education and prepare you for a future career in the media industry. We are currently looking for seniors (as of September 2011), recent graduates (as of May 2011) or graduate level or students. You must have an interest in media and issues related to African-American women. We are looking for a diligent, self-motivated and extremely detail-oriented individual to take on various opportunities throughout departments in both the Publishing and Editorial divisions.

Details about the application process include:

  • Only one application per person will be considered. Selected interns will be notified by e-mail or phone on or before March 31, 2011. Due to the large volume of applications, we will not be able to respond to telephone calls or e-mail inquiries.
  • To apply for an ESSENCE internship, submit a completed application, resume and a writing sample or a digital portfolio including your designs and/or photography.
  • Interns will receive a bi-weekly stipend.
  • Interns will be assigned to one department but will be exposed to other areas of the company. For a list of departments and job descriptions, please click here.
  • Interns are expected to find their own housing. We suggest you contact your school’s career center for information on temporary housing in the New York City area. You may also want to contact New York City area colleges and universities to ask about renting a dormitory room for the summer.
  • The program runs from the first week of June until the first week of August.
  • All materials submitted to ESSENCE become the property of Essence Communications Inc. and will be kept on file for 3 months.

If you are currently an undergraduate, graduate student, or a recent graduate (as of June 2011) then you are eligible to apply for an Editorial or Publishing internship at Time Inc. Summer internships are offered on an as-needed basis; magazines positions may vary. Most positions are full-time, 35 hours per week and based in NYC. ASME Internship program

In addition to applying for the ESSENCE Communications Summer Internship Program, we suggest that you contact the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME), which acts as a clearinghouse for internships available within the publishing industry. You must complete an application to be considered for their 10-week program for rising college seniors at magazines in New York City and Washington, D.C. For more information, click here
