Nia Long Talks 'Good Hair'

On the heels of her appearance in comedian Chris Rock's documentary "Good Hair," actress Nia Long and ESSENCE invited five smart and stylish women--singer Solange Knowles; singer Ledisi; TV host Tanika Ray; celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen; and writer and producer Tonya Lewis Lee--for a provocative discussion about Black women's love-hate relationship with their hair in the article "The Root of the Issue." The exchanges between the women, moderated by ESSENCE beauty and cover director Mikki Taylor, range from hilarious to heartbreaking, but they all keep it real on this hot-button issue.

Nia Long is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in life, or onscreen; and the other women were lovely, too. However, I must express myself about the "good hair" nonsense.
GOOD HAIR IS ANY HAIR WHICH COVERS YOUR SCALP. GET YOUR PRORITIES IN ORDER,LADIES. I find endless fretting about Black women's hair extremely tedious for the following reasons:
1)Health is far more important than vanity.Good grooming is enough.
2)What is inside a woman's head is far more important than what covers it.
3)I've always had long,silky,curly
hair that tangled easily and a tender scalp, partially due to chronic migraines which began when I was 8 years old.I've been to the hairdresser's exactly 5 times in 43 years.(I relaxed my hair at home for roughly 20 years before rejecting all chemicals.)Genetic weaknesses led to a
cluster of neurological disorders, one of which required very intensive neurosurgery. I told the neurosurgeon to do anything neccessary, including shaving my entire head and putting stitches across my forehead like Dr. Frankenstein's monster.I wound up with a third of my head shaved, a 7.5 inch incision, and an enormous hole in my skull which has yet to completely fuse.Having surgical staples removed 1 week later, with hair skin growing over them, is a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. So think about it, my sisters. Would you rather a)have long silky hair which covers your shoulder blade on one side, grew in completely straight on the shaved side,AND BE COMPLETELY DIASABLED,
or b) spend a fortune at a salon and have good health?
Ask someone with aolpecia or baldness caused by radiation, too.

I agree with another reader.....your website has become user-UNfriendly! I used to enjoy browsing your site....not anymore!

What happened to your website? It's so empty, cold and non-userfriendly! It use to be so much more engaging! I'm glad I don't subscribe anymore...I pick and choose my issues at the store...they come there before they come to the "paid subscribers" anyway! That was one of my biggest complaints when I did pay for subscriptions; the store would receive the latest issue BEFORE ME!!!

Now, I pay as I go, and most months don't bother! You seem to have a "select" group of women you feature on your cover and they just get rotated every few months! It's annoying!!! All the FABULOUS BLACK WOMEN out here (me included) and we constantly get covers with Queen Latifah, Nia Long, Gabrielle Union, Monique!!! OMG! Give it a break!
