Hairstyle File: Regina King Through The Years

From her role as Brenda on the 1980's NBC series "227" to her recent turn as beleaguered LAPD detective Lydia Adams on TNT's gritty drama "Southland," award-winning actress Regina King has grown up before our eyes! Without any of the tabloid hiccups that befall child actresses, she quietly managed to grow into one of the most prolific, well-regarded actresses in Hollywood. Next up is comedy "Our Family Wedding," in theaters next Friday.

Consider the fact that, along with starring in mainstream blockbusters like Enemy of the State, Jerry McGuire and Ray, she also appeared in practically every Black hit made in the '90s (hello, Boys 'n' The Hood, Poetic Justice, Friday, How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Higher Learning)! Along with building an impressive resume of classic films, King has also amassed a series of fabulous hairstyles over the years.

Rihanna and Vampire Diaries' actress Katerina Graham are the latest stars to adopt Hollywood's newest "trendlet": The curly bangs-and-hat combo. How cute is this? The perfect antidote to award seasons' fancy red carpet hairstyles, this casually fly look flatters both short and long hair (Katerina's loose curls hit her mid-back, and Rihanna...well, we have a feeling you're familiar with her cut). Plus the "oh, I just threw on this hat" thing is fabulous on bad hair days. Very Charlie Chaplin meets Madonna's "Open Your Heart" video.

The idea that natural, chemical-free Black hair is considered "revolutionary" is a strange one, indeed. But the White standard of beauty is so embedded in the country's DNA that, by the time the "Black is Beautiful" movement hit in the '60s--and women proudly rocked afros and braids (like gorgeous Cicely Tyson, left)--the simple act of embracing the hair that grew out of our heads was considered a bold counter-culture statement. In celebration of Black History Month, lets take a look back at some notable moments in the history of revolutionary hair...

Mariah Carey, we love you. We think your "we're eternally twelve and desperately in love" relationship with hubby Nick Cannon is both adorable and genuine. We celebrate your whole catalog, from "Vision of Love" to "Obsessed." We even bought tickets to "Glitter" on opening night and, dammit, we saw where you were going with it. Most of all, Mariah, your various, vixen-y hairstyles have held us rapt for twenty years. We love it all, from your moussed-up, Long Island girl curls to your sleek pony at the 2010 Golden Globes.
