“I want to congratulate Marc Anthony, not only because it’s his birthday but also because he’s being honored tonight as an artist who has shared not only his music but his heritage with all of us.”
The President spoke with workers at the Lordstown Complex General Motors Plant in Warren, Ohio, on September 15.
“It is good to be back in Ohio, and it’s good to be at one of GM’s flagship plants with all of you,” said Mr. Obama. “I just finished having a productive discussion with some of your coworkers about the challenges you’re facing, both here and in your communities, and how we can meet them. As long as you’ve still got an ounce of fight left in you, I’ll have a ton of fight left in me.”
The President and Mrs. Obama went to a Habitat For Humanity housing project in Deanwood, a neighborhood in northeast Washington, D.C., where they visited a three-home development that will be completed at the beginning of next year.
They took them on a tour of the project then they went into one of the houses, where Mr. Obama used a roller to paint a wall while Mrs Obama took care of a corner with a brush. The paint was a shade called “cool platinum.”
The President and First Lady paint in a house being built by Habitat for Humanity on September 11 in Washington, D.C. In observance of the eighth anniversary of 9/11, the Obamas participated in the community service activity after attending a moment of silence for 9/11 victims on the South Lawn of the White House.
First Lady Michelle Obama arrived in the House chamber with Vicki Kennedy, the wife of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), and Jill Biden, the wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, before they all listened to the President address member of Congress about the passage of his national health care plan.
“We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it,” said the President seen here embracing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. “I still believe we can act even when it’s hard. I still believe we can replace acrimony with civility, and gridlock with progress. I still believe we can do great things, and that here and now we will meet history’s test.”
President Obama hosts a dinner recognizing the religious observance of Ramadan in the State Dining Room of the White House on September 1.
This is Mr. Obama’s first state dinner celebrating the Muslim holiday and is part of an effort to rebuild diplomatic relations with Islamic nations.
