Her Leading Man: Alonza Bobby Mumford, 39, Computer Science Researcher
To Be Married On: July 28, 2012
Where and how did you meet your man?
I met Alonza online on a social networking site in December 2007. I was a resident physician at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Alonza lived in Maryland and he was home for the holidays visiting his family in Miami. He sent me a message after browsing the Miami pictures. In the past, guys typically offered to take me out for alcohol but Alonza asked to meet me for coffee. This made me feel safe, made me feel he truly wanted to get to know me.
Was it love at first sight?
More like love at first conversation. I found him very attractive, but I was even more impressed as he shared his passion for community service, his zeal to start his own business and his love of spending time with his family. Our first date was an early brunch and the conversation just flowed. I was very comfortable around him.
Weirdest date you’ve ever been on?
On Alonza’s 35th birthday, his family planned a big celebration dinner at a local Miami restaurant. Alonza went on an early morning 20-mile run on the beach. He developed severe muscle cramps and ended up in the hospital with dehydration without his cell phone. I’m all dolled up waiting for him to come pick me up. I couldn’t believe he had stood me up so I went to his parents house to make sure he was OK. His parents had just found out he was in the emergency room. We took the celebration to his bedside.
What’s the sweetest thing he’s ever done for you?
Alonza surprised me with my favorite flower when we were dating long distance. He knew I had a bad night on call in the hospital. The next morning when I got home from work I saw a beautiful orchid sitting at the front desk of my condo. I went to smell it and saw my name on the card attached.
Best gift he ever got you?
Alonza treated me to my very first massage and spa day to celebrate graduation from residency. It was the best gift ever! I was completely pampered and queen for the day.
What do you friends say about him?
They are happy that I am so happy.
How did he pop the question?
We moved in together in August 2009. On September 1, 2010 we were hanging out at home and had just finished putting a bookcase together. Alonza gave me a high-five and said “Go Team Mumford.” I politely reminded him that I was still on Team Wooten. He then asked me, “ How can I get you on Team Mumford?” I replied, “ Just ask.” (I had no idea he had purchased a ring and was waiting for the right time to present it.) Alonza stepped out of the room and I didn’t suspect a thing; I figured he was going to the restroom. He returned and got down on one knee holding a small box and said, “ Will you please marry me and join Team Mumford?” “Yes, yes, yes!” I replied.
