Spring for a Funky Cut
Publicity coordinator Michelle Watts appreciates the genius of a great cut. With a style that’s unconstructed yet precise, the risk taker knows how to work it.
Get the look: Barber Neil Brown of Flavaz Barber Shop in New Rochelle, New York, uses clippers to taper one side and the back of the head, shaping the opposite side with scissors. After washing and conditioning, Michelle wraps hair with a wrapping lotion (try Motions Foaming Wrap Lotion) and then lets it air dry.
Helpful hint: To keep the shape, sides and back are cut every two weeks.
Add Layers
Juliet Fisher of the Indra Salon in New York City shows us how to have fun with our hair using layers and a little finger-styling.
Get the look: Fisher washes and wraps hair with Jane Carter Wrap & Roll. She then curls the hair with a small flat iron in various directions to create flips and spikes. Then she finger-styles it into the desired look with Bed Head Rubber Rage styling wax for definition. She finishes by spraying Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine Super Spray to hold.

Helpful hint: This style is not for the sistah who likes every strand to fall into place; it looks best when it’s loosely finger-styled and deliberately undone.

Add Colored Pieces
Ruth Laviera Sanchez of the El Yunque Oba salon in New York City strategically placed handmade custom-colored clip-on pieces into the hair to create wonderful highlights without the dryness often associated with permanent color.
Get the look: Sanchez cuts her custom-colored pieces to blend in with this short cropped style. She uses a curling iron to create wavy wisps. To add definition to ends, try a product like Aveda Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade.
Helpful hint: To avoid damage, remove clip-on pieces at least once a week to cleanse and condition hair and pieces.
