As Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicks off today, ESSENCE.com salutes those celebs who are crusading against it and those who have survived this deadly disease that claims more African-American women’s lives than any other race.
Gabrielle Union, ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s
Circle of Promise, joins more than 25,000 participants, including 1,600
breast cancer survivors, at the Susan G. Komen New York City Race
for the Cure in Central Park on September 13, 2009. The 5K run/walk
event’s goal was to raise more than $6 million for breast cancer research
and community outreach programs.
